Olympia is the capital of Washington State, and attracts a significant homeless/addict population

Washington State’s primary election results are finally settled.   Thanks to Washington’s mail-in ballot system, it often takes weeks to collect the late-mailed ballots for final tabulation.  Now every close election in Washington consists of weeks watching ballot returns and counts.  Eventually the winners are confirmed.  In the City of Olympia, which hosts the Washington State Capital, the election results have been finalized.  Assuming politicians have any ability to make positive change and are more than just figureheads for the bureaucracy, then the future for the City of Olympia is continuing to dim.

Selby and Jones advance to the final November election.

This year’s mayoral election had five candidates for office, three of whom were able to generate more than anemic voter support.  This lot included the incumbent Mayor Cheryl Shelby facing off against fellow long-time councilman Nathanial Jones, and newcomer reform challenger David Ross.  Although Ross ran a quiet and traditional race, he missed making it through the primary – falling 112 votes shy of second place Nathaniel Jones, who squeaked out a 25.58% showing with 2,973 votes received.

Incumbent Mayor Cheryl Selby

Incumbent Mayor Shelby handily advances with a not impressive 40% voter support.  Of course, not many voters participated.  According to the County Auditor’s office, 26% of the voters participated in Thurston County, and in the City of Olympia the percentage was closer to 34%.  Considering the 24,000+ voters in Olympia who didn’t bother to vote, a very small percentage of non-apathetic people are impacting who the political figureheads will be in the city.

Councilman Nathanial Jones

Jones and Shelby will advance to the general election in November and while they are sure to bludgeon each other through surrogates, mailers, and whisper campaigns – the final election result won’t change much.   Selby will continue to manage Olympia’s descent into fiscal, public safety, and junkie “homeless” camp ugliness.  Jones is likely to change very little and maybe even accelerate the descent into Olympia’s future as an experiment in planned urban blight.  David Ross was a potential outsider who might have been different and probably would have been a breath of fresh air, but Olympia’s mayor is a weak position anyway.  Other than ceremonial representation and a fun resume enhancement, there is little power to make change.

Olympia’s junkie homeless camps add character and urban ambiance to the city, but they don’t help attract tourists or business investment

The real political power in Olympia rests with the bureaucracy, and they certainly don’t want change. The special interests driving and expanding the homeless/junkie population will continue to control the council.  Fiscal restraint long ago disappeared as a quaint and archaic concept in local governance.  Tax increases are certain to be proposed – and they are never, and will never be enough.  Public safety is certain to be de-emphasized, and the Olympia City Council will continue to virtue signal its way into worse shape.  Encouraging Olympia’s decay is the Olympia political way right now, but of course, we all know it is all Trump’s fault.

Boudicca Walsh, self-described Trans Radical Witch and former chair of the Thurston County Democratic Party

One other side observation, to this author’s great disappointment, the self-described Trans Radical Witch Boudicca Walsh, former chair of the Thurston County Democratic Party was crushed in the primary with an embarrassing 10% showing.  It would have been fun to have a Trans Radical Witch on the Olympia City Council.

Regardless of whether Shelby or Jones gets to claim the title of king, queen or mayor in November, they will be pushing hard to share the joys and wonder of their historic financial mismanagement with others.  Most obviously, their priority of entrapping Thurston County voters into squandering their resources on a proposed new downtown courthouse scheme.  This tax increase scheme is scheduled to be on the ballot next April, and we’ve discussed it at some length here, here, here, and here.  This crew will also work to export their junkie/homeless problem into surrounding communities

Until November, their priority will be win the throne and claim the title as queen or king (or mayor) of the ashes, even if they must burn Olympia down to obtain this goal.

OUR CONSTITUTION BEGINS WITH THE PHRASE “WE THE PEOPLE.”  IT WAS THE FOUNDER’S INTENT THAT GOVERNMENT BE CREATED BY THE PEOPLE, TO SERVE THE PEOPLE.  IT WASN’T THEIR INTENTION FOR THE PEOPLE TO SERVE THE GOVERNMENT.  IT WAS ALWAYS INTENDED THAT GOVERNMENT WHICH FAILED TO SERVE THE PEOPLE SHOULD BE “ALTERED OR ABOLISHED.”  UNTIL WE RETURN TO THE FOUNDER’S INTENT, WE REMAIN WE THE GOVERNED

  1. The City of Olympia has the characteristics of a failed state. The government allowed the destruction of a city, traditions and businesses built over generations. It failed to protect law abiding residents and their property.

One non-violent strategy for dealing with a failed state involves withdrawing consent, allowing the system to fail and rebuilding the institutions required for effective governance. Is anyone really pathetically naive enough to believe the results of vote-by-mail scam elections in King and other obviously corrupt counties? Many years ago I witnessed blatant election fraud covered up by both major parties and the legacy media. It’s insulting to expect anyone to believe election results when ballots often magically appear – sometimes long after Election Day.
